Museum of Sondershausen Palace

to the historical rooms of Sondershausen Palace. The museum has been located in the former residence of the princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen since 1923. You can explore our multifaceted collection on three floors: The bel étage with its fascinating and spectacular décors is home to the exhibition on the House of Schwarzburg, whose descendants resided in Sondershausen until 1951. Art and artisanal objects, which often belonged to the last princes of Schwarzburg, are on display as well as grand ballrooms and the princely natural history cabinet.

On the third floor, our visitors can discover the history of the town of Sondershausen and the entire region from prehistoric to modern times. Especially the long-standing local traditions of mining and music are evident in the permanent exhibition, but there are also presentations on natural history, archaeology and biology as well as on the history of the church, the military, the legal system and the economy. We offer something interesting for everyone. Due to the musical tradition of Sondershausen, which arose from the passion for music and the fine arts of some of its rulers, the museum holds a small but exclusive collection of historical instruments.

One of our most famous and valuable pieces awaits you on the ground floor: the Golden Carriage, a French grand carosse from the beginning of the 18th century.

Opening Times

Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 5 pm

Audio guides in English are available (1 € per person).

Please book guided tours in advance by email or phone (schlossmuseum@sondershausen.de, 0 36 32 - 62 24 20). We charge 50 € per group (up to 29 people) in addition to the entrance fee.
