Museum of Castle Sondershausen

Dear Visitor,

we would like to welcome you warmly in the historical rooms of Castle Sondershausen. Since 1923 the Museum is located in the former Residence of the Counts and since 1697 Dukes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. We show parts of our multifaceted collection in a two-level exhibition: The bel étage with its fascinating and spectacular décors is home of the department for the history of the Schwarzburger noble family. Art and artisanal objects which belong partly to the legacy of the last Dukes of Schwarzburg, who resided in Sondershausen until 1951, are also shown as ballrooms and the princely natural history cabinet.

Up at the third floor our visitors can explore the history of the city of Sondershausen as well as the region as a whole, from prehistoric days until the modern time. Especially the long-term traditions of our city, mining and music, are treated in the standing exhibition, but there are also departments for natural history, archaeology, biology, church, military and legal history and economy, which hold an interesting offer for everybody. As Sondershausen has a very old music-tradition deriving from the passion of some rulers in former times for music and the fine arts the Museum holds a small but exclusive collection of historical instruments.
